When Batik Speaks: Integrating Textile Traditions into Language and Narrative Writing

Abstract

This article explores the possibilities of traditional Indonesian batik as a means of creative cultural expression in language and storytelling. Batik is an art form rich in symbolism and storytelling, but it transcends mere tradition; it serves as a visual language that embodies history, identity, and philosophy. Creating written works that relate to batik making will allow students and writers to express narratives inspired by its patterns, thereby gaining insight into cultural practices through creative storytelling. Through qualitative classroom activities and interviews, we investigate how the interpretation of batik motifs—such as Parang, Mega Mendung, and Cikadu—can contribute to character development, story building, and thematic reflection. The findings show that the students are more drawn to and value Indonesian heritage, which is incorporated into the cultural learning language. This research demonstrates that incorporating textile traditions like batik into educational settings fosters creative expression, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary learning in a culturally enriched way.
